Is this a place we know ? What is it that I may own ? Is there anything that might be lost ?
A pair of pianos, older than anyone alive, are singing an endless Markov chain chord progression. The algorithm is not reproducing something it has learned, instead it is following its own path between predefined limits. But as it exhausts the finite possibilities, do we tell appart the machine’s decisions and the human design ? Is this creation or deconstruction ? What are the boundaries between the composer and the composition system used ?
These are some of the questions running through my mind as I work on this series, especially this chapter. Maybe these are naive. But as a user of digital tools I regularly feel the need of adjust my relation to a technology that is changing every day.
